# Ask the plan about your exact treatment.

Write down the medicine, its form and why the person prescribing it suggests it. Use those details when asking your insurance plan what it will pay.

 At the visit

Ask for the answer in plain words. Keep what is still unclear on your list.

## Coverage depends on the use and the plan

For uses other than weight loss, Medicare payment depends on the drug list and prior approval rules in your plan, as of September 26, 2026.

Ask whether the exact product is on the plan's list, whether approval is needed first and what records the plan asks for.

Then ask what you pay if the request is accepted, denied or still being reviewed. Find out who will submit the paperwork.

What that care term means Prior authorization

Your plan checks a request before agreeing to payment. A prescription alone does not complete that step.

## Medicare has a temporary payment program

As of September 26, 2026, Medicare's usual drug benefit excludes medicines when used solely for weight loss.

Under a separate, temporary Medicare program, eligible people can obtain certain weight-loss medicines for $50 per monthly supply, as of September 26, 2026.

The program's stated opening date is July 1, 2026, and its closing date is December 31, 2027, as checked on September 26, 2026.

This is a temporary program outside the usual drug benefit, not broad coverage for every person or product.

As of September 26, 2026, you must be at least eighteen and meet weight and health rules. The program uses a height-and-weight measure called body mass index (BMI).

With a BMI of 35 or more, the weight rule is met without another listed health condition.

At BMI 30 or higher, the program accepts a type of heart failure in which the heart's pumping strength is preserved. Blood pressure can qualify if the upper reading stays above 140 or the lower stays above 90 despite two blood-pressure medicines. At that BMI, kidney disease can also qualify if it is at stage 3a or later. The stage describes how much kidney function is reduced; ask your doctor which stage is in your record.

At BMI 27 or higher, the program lists prediabetes, a past stroke or heart attack, or symptoms from peripheral artery disease. Prediabetes means blood sugar above normal but below the diabetes level. Peripheral artery disease affects arteries outside the heart.

People with type 2 diabetes must ask their usual Medicare drug plan about payment; they cannot use this temporary program, as of September 26, 2026.

Other rules cover your Medicare plan, previous drug coverage and exact diagnosis.

Ask the person prescribing your medicine to check all the program rules against your medical record before expecting the quoted payment.

What that care term means Monthly supply

The amount of medicine covered by one prescription fill. Ask what the payment covers for the exact product.

## Check which bills your medical spending account can pay

A flexible spending account (FSA) or health savings account (HSA) can hold money set aside for medical bills.

Weight-loss bills can qualify as medical expenses for these accounts if care addresses a doctor-diagnosed disease, as of September 26, 2026.

Ask the person managing your HSA or FSA what proof is needed. Keep that person's written answer and your receipts before using the account to pay.

What that care term means Diagnosed disease

A disease a doctor has identified, such as obesity, high blood pressure or heart disease. Spending only for general health does not meet the same rule.

Use these Boston briefings to consider peptide care. The site provides guidance; it does not offer clinical care or sell medicines.
