# A visit begins with your situation.

Start with what you want help with. A list of products can wait until the person assessing you has heard your history and questions.

 At the visit

Ask for the answer in plain words. Keep what is still unclear on your list.

A place to pause and prepare.

## Expect an assessment before a decision

As of September 30, 2026, Massachusetts board policy calls for a medical history, a suitable examination and written findings before a doctor prescribes.

Write down your aim. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, past treatments and questions. Mention anything that may change the discussion, including pregnancy plans.

Ask how the person assessing you reached the decision and what other options were considered.

What that care term means Medical history

The account of your health so far: conditions, medicines, past care and what has changed.

## Online care can be an option

The Massachusetts medical board permits visits by video, phone or an online exchange without a previous visit in person, as of September 30, 2026. An exception applies when another law requires a visit in person.

The same care standard applies to a doctor seeing you online or in a room, as of September 30, 2026.

A telehealth visit means meeting through video, phone or an online exchange. Ask about the visit format and how to raise questions of your own.

What that care term means Care standard

## If a screen cannot complete the assessment

Medical board guidance calls for tests or a referral when the assessment needs them, as of September 17, 2026.

Ask who arranges a test, who reads the result and what it adds to the decision. If an examination is needed, ask where it will happen.

What that care term means Referral

Being sent to another doctor or care service for the next part of care.

## Leave with a follow-up route

Ask who answers questions after the visit. Find out how to reach that person, how replies work and what a review visit costs.

Keep the written plan. Add any questions that came up after the call or on the way home.

- I can explain the aim of the plan.
- I know who reads any test results.
- I know how to ask a follow-up question.
